Trumpet~ Jerry Hogue Born in San Antonio, Texas Jerry was raised to the age of 18 in a small community to the southwest. Early musical influences are his father, Clyde E. Hogue, Sr., Al Sturchio, his first band director and Moddie Smith, his first long term band director. He has studied trumpet with Kenneth Muckelroy of Tyler, Jerry Lane of Colorado, and various other players with whom he has associated and observed. Jerry was taught to read shaped notes by his father by the age of five. At the age of six, he began learning to read English. At nine years of age, he entered the band program at his school and began to study trumpet under the tutelage of Sturchio. Two years later, Smith took over the directorship of the band and stayed with it for four years. Upon graduation from high school, Jerry entered college as a music major and emerged with a B.A. in music, and later an M.A. in interdisciplinary studies. Following graduation from college, he spent the next 14 years teaching instrumental music in Texas’ public schools. During that time, he was called on to play trumpet for the occasional wedding or community band. After a ten-year break from teaching during which he honed his instrument repair skills, Jerry was asked to take a position with South San ISD where he is now teaching. In 1994, Jerry, with partner Kim Zoeller, formed the group now known as Brass Roots quintet and has played with that group for most of the time since.Jerry is a member of Texas Music Educators Association. TMEA, Texas Bandmasters Association. TBA, and the International Trumpet Guild. In 1999, he was invited to join a trumpet quartet (The Tyler Trumpets) to play for the ITG European convention in Bad Sackingen, Germany. Over the years, Jerry has played in many venues of that import. A long time supporter of Community bands, Jerry was a co founder of the Tyler municipal band in 1975 with colleague Fred Foeh. The band was a reorganization of one of Texas’ longest lasting community bands but it lasted only one year after Jerry left Tyler, Texas for a teaching position in Johnson City, Texas. Presently, he is musical director of the County Line Community Band of Atascosa County, Texas. |
